How to Pay Less Gas on Ethereum: 9 Practical Tips

By the GasNow team · Updated October 9, 2026

1. Check the live gas price before you sign

Fees can move by an order of magnitude within an hour. A quick look at the Ethereum gas tracker tells you whether you are about to transact during a spike. If nothing is urgent, waiting for the spike to pass is the cheapest optimization there is.

2. Transact when demand is low

Ethereum demand follows human activity. Historically, weekends and the hours when both the United States and Europe are asleep tend to be cheaper, while US market hours and major launches tend to be pricier. GasNow publishes an hour-by-hour view built from its own recorded data on the best time to send Ethereum page.

3. Use a layer-2 rollup for everyday activity

Rollups such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and zkSync execute transactions off mainnet and post compressed data back to Ethereum. Since the Dencun upgrade introduced blob space for rollup data, typical L2 transactions cost a fraction of a cent. If your app and assets are available on an L2, using it is usually the single biggest saving. See why layer-2 fees are cheaper.

4. Do not overpay the priority fee

Under EIP-1559 the base fee is fixed per block. Only the tip is yours to choose. In calm periods, a small tip already gets you into the next block, so selecting "Fast" in a wallet buys almost nothing. Reserve high tips for time-sensitive transactions such as closing a position during a crash.

5. Set a reasonable max fee and let it wait

If you are not in a hurry, set your max fee close to the current base fee. The transaction will wait in the mempool until the base fee drops to your level. You will never pay more than the cap you set.

6. Avoid transactions that will fail

Reverted transactions still consume gas. Common causes are too-tight slippage on swaps during volatility, expired deadlines and interacting with a contract before an approval has confirmed. Wait for the approval to confirm and use sensible slippage.

7. Be deliberate with token approvals

Every new spender needs an approval transaction before it can move your tokens. Approving exactly the amount you need is safer, but you pay for a new approval every time. Unlimited approvals save gas but increase risk if the spender contract is compromised. Choose consciously, and periodically revoke approvals you no longer use.

8. Batch and consolidate

Paying many recipients in one transaction through a multisend contract, or using wallets that support batched calls, spreads fixed overhead across many actions. Aggregators also route a swap through several pools in one transaction instead of several separate swaps.

9. Compare the dollar cost, not the gwei

A low gwei number can still be expensive for a complex action, and a high gwei number can be fine for a tiny one. GasNow's cost pages convert live gas prices into dollars for common actions, such as a Uniswap swap, an ERC-20 transfer or an NFT mint.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest time to use Ethereum?

Usually weekends and late-night hours in both the US and Europe, when activity is lowest. GasNow's best-time page shows the hourly pattern measured from recent data.

Does paying a higher tip make my transaction cheaper overall?

No. A higher tip only buys priority. In calm periods it adds cost without making inclusion meaningfully faster.
