How to Lower Bitcoin Transaction Fees: SegWit, Batching and Timing

By the GasNow team · Updated October 9, 2026

Use native SegWit or Taproot addresses

Addresses starting with bc1q (native SegWit) or bc1p (Taproot) produce smaller transactions in virtual bytes than legacy addresses starting with 1. A typical legacy payment is about 226 vB, while the same native SegWit payment is about 141 vB, which is roughly 38% cheaper at any fee rate. If your wallet still uses legacy addresses, moving to a modern wallet pays for itself quickly.

Consolidate small UTXOs when fees are low

Every coin your wallet holds is a separate unspent output (UTXO), and each one you spend adds about 68 vB to a SegWit transaction. If you received many small payments, a future send could need dozens of inputs and become expensive during a fee spike. The fix is to consolidate: send all small UTXOs to yourself in one transaction during a quiet period, when 1–3 sat/vB confirms. The consolidation cost page estimates what that costs right now.

Batch outgoing payments

If you pay several people, one transaction with many outputs is much smaller than many separate transactions, because the overhead and inputs are paid only once. Exchanges batch withdrawals for exactly this reason.

Pick the fee rate for your deadline

Not every payment needs the next block. Check the live Fast, Standard and Slow rates and choose by urgency. If you are flexible, set a low rate and let the transaction wait. With Replace-By-Fee enabled, you can always bump it later if needed.

Avoid sending during known demand bursts

Fee spikes often follow sharp price moves, as many users withdraw from exchanges at once, and token or inscription minting waves. Weekends are usually calmer than weekdays. The Bitcoin fee history page shows recent day-by-day ranges recorded by GasNow.

Consider Lightning for small, frequent payments

The Lightning Network moves payments off-chain through payment channels, with fees usually measured in a few sats. Opening and closing channels are on-chain transactions, so Lightning makes most sense when you will make many payments over time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Bitcoin address type?

Native SegWit (bc1q) produces the smallest typical payment. Taproot (bc1p) is close and offers privacy and scripting benefits. Legacy addresses (starting with 1) are the most expensive.

When should I consolidate UTXOs?

When fees are at their lowest, typically 1–3 sat/vB, so merging many small coins costs as little as possible.
