Crypto Fear & Greed Index Explained: How to Read It

By the GasNow team · Updated October 9, 2026

What the index is

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, published by Alternative.me, compresses overall crypto market sentiment into one number from 0 to 100. Readings near 0 mean extreme fear; readings near 100 mean extreme greed. GasNow displays the latest value with its label and keeps a history of recorded readings on the Fear & Greed page.

The scale

The labels run from Extreme Fear at the bottom of the scale, through Fear, Neutral and Greed, to Extreme Greed at the top. The midpoint of 50 is neutral. GasNow shows the label exactly as the publisher assigns it, next to the number.

What goes into it

The index combines several observable signals about Bitcoin and the wider market: price volatility compared with recent averages, market momentum and trading volume, social media activity and engagement, Bitcoin's dominance of total market capitalization, and search trends. Sharp drawdowns with rising volatility push the index toward fear; strong rallies with heavy volume and social buzz push it toward greed.

How traders use it

The most common use is contrarian. The idea, often summarized as "be fearful when others are greedy", is that extreme greed often coincides with crowded, overextended markets, while extreme fear often coincides with capitulation and better long-term entry prices. Others use it as a simple risk dial: lower position sizes when the index is euphoric, and look for opportunities when it has been in extreme fear for a while.

Limitations

Pair it with structural indicators

Sentiment tells you how participants feel. Structural data tells you how they are positioned. GasNow places the Fear & Greed Index next to its Market Stress Index, built from derivatives funding, open interest, volatility and stablecoin flows. When greed is extreme and leverage is elevated at the same time, the market is more fragile than either number suggests alone.
